He graduated in Cinema from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). He started as an Assistant Director in 1996 and, since then, he has worked in more than 80 feature films as Assistant to award-winning filmmakers, among them: Daniel Filho, Tizuka Yamasaki, Murilo Salles, Osvaldo Caldeira, Paulo Cesar Saraceni, Rosane Svarztman, Guillermo Arriaga and Roberto Santucci.
Hsu Chien has directed 8 short films, receiving more than 20 awards in Brazilian and International Festivals. Among the awards, highlights include Best Fiction Short Film in 2015 for "Flirtation" at the Brazilian Film Academy Grand Prix, and Best Short Film at Labrf 2015. "My Price" from 2018, directed with Fabricio Santiago and Felipe Cabral, received 8 international awards.
In Cinema, he directed the feature films "A Five Star Day" in 2022, "Suddenly Miss" in 2022, "Take Me Out of Sight" in 2021, "Sara, Lia and Leia" in 2021, "Get Unstuck!" in 2021, "Who's Going to Keep Mario?" in 2020 and "Nobody In, Nobody Out" in 2017. On tv, he co-directed the series "Sexo e as negas" and "Pé na cova", on Globo TV, "Por isso eu sou vingativa", on Multishow, and "A dona da banca", on Cine Canal Tv Brasil
Hsu is also a teacher, and has taught free courses at the Darcy Ribeiro and ABC School of Cinema courses.
In 2018, he was part of the Oscar committee for choosing the Brazilian film that would represent Brazil at the event.
